My name is Cecily Henderson. My story is about endurance….persistence…..and beauty from within.
Everyone has a story…and I would like to share my story with you.
It started when I was 14 years old. My dream was to become a doctor. I was fascinated about how the body works. I wanted to learn how to keep the body healthy and discover the secret to running marathons at 65.
Despite my best efforts….I was not granted the opportunity to complete my medical education. At the age of 26 I dealt with devastating health problems. I found out I had thyroid cancer 4 years later. After 2 intensive surgeries and radiation treatments, I was finally given rest from intensive treatments and surgical intervention.
At the age of 33, I was diagnosed with severe Ankylosing Spondylitis….a rare genetic rheumatoid disorder. My symptoms were so painful, I could barley function most days. In the mean time, I raised a son and daughter while my husband was far away flying for the Air Force.
In 2014, I was rushed to the Emergency Room because I could not stand up. My legs and body were limp….I was dying. The doctors diagnosed me with Guillain-Barré syndrome. (GBS) is a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and, when severe, the person is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases the disorder is life threatening – potentially interfering with breathing and, at times, with blood pressure or heart rate. I came very close to being put on a ventilator, but the doctors acted quickly to administer IVIG treatment and saved my life.
6 weeks after I experienced GBS, I was back at the hospital again with the same symptoms. I was treated for almost 2 weeks in the hospital. Then after another 6 weeks…..back at the hospital for treatment.
Now I currently am on treatment every 2 months so I do not become paralyzed or worse. During this past decade, I dedicated myself to research the best ways to become healthier…..happier….and find beauty within.
I am currently studying to get my health coaching certification. I want to help others who are suffering devastating illnesses, who are looking to make healthier changes in their lives, and those who are discouraged about how they feel inside and out.
Please join me on this discovery of my beautiful health…and yours.
